
Introduction:
As a local non- political non-governmental voluntary organization, Society Development Committee (SDC) emerged in 1988 at Boalmari upazila of Faridpur district. From the beginning SDC used to operate several kinds of promotional activities like social awareness, education, health & nutrition and sanitation. Alongside these kinds of promotional activities, the organization started its micro credit program following the demand of the target beneficiaries in 1990 through its own fund. Subsequently, it attained the membership of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in 1992 and in the same year, SDC incorporated Rural Micro credit Program in its existing micro credit program with the financial support of PKSF. Since then, SDC has been administering and implementing different types of development programs/projects with a view to socioeconomic development as well as furtherance of livelihood status of the destitute, disadvantaged and backward poor people with the emphasis of women folk. Recently SDC has attained the age of 19 years. Over the period it has gradually expanded its agenda of activities and is implementing different programs/projects in different upazilas in different districts. It has a team of experienced and dedicated staffs who are discharging their duties assiduously remaining in different positions and in different areas. Management is providing necessary support to all level of staffs for overall program administering and implementation commensurately.
Moreover, SDC so far have been able to establish Network, linkage, collaboration, partnership with different local, national and international NGOs/donor agencies, different government institutions as well as different peoples organizations / professional groups. SDC always follows a policy of ‘comprehensive endeavors in development process’ and therefore, it sought all kind of cooperation and support from the people of all sphere of life, government institutions and different donor agencies. However, SDC has been providing different supports to its target beneficiaries through carrying out different programs and interventions within its organizational structure and approach, which are elaborated here consecutively-
Vision:
The vision of SDC is to establish just, good governance, exploitation and poverty free; gender equity and environment friendly well established Bangladesh.
Mission:
Not relief but release is the principle of SDC and it is practicing the institutional approach of the rural disadvantaged people ensuring their active participation in development process. The participation, access and control over the resources, facilities and also development process are ensured by equally men and women. Developed and strong relation with local, national and international development agencies are given emphasized. Participatory discussion and democratic system is strongly followed regarding resource management and empowerment of the poor and extreme poor for their sustainable development.
Goal :
To develop socio-economic status of the poor and extreme poor in view of poverty reduction and livelihood development through commensurate management of resources with an emphasis of women empowerment.
Objectives :
a) To work in the interest of the distressed and oppressed population of the society with the emphasis on such fundamental needs as food, cloth, shelter, health and education..
b) To encourage, stimulate and facilitate on building of organizations through ensuring the participation of poor and extreme poor with the emphasis of women participation.
c) To motivate and mobilize small groups of target beneficiaries in rural areas and to deposit savings by them
d) To foster both formal and non-formal education for adults and the disadvantaged children insuring community involvement in this process.
e) To facilitate the creation of employment opportunities for the beneficiaries so that they would be able to uplift their livelihood as per their aspiration.
f) To stabilize population growth, protect human health and make them human resources through resorting conceptual training.
g) To organize and train the deprived section of the rural population as groups of active, patriotic, hard working and self dependent citizens of Bangladesh.
h) To build the capacity in terms of human and financial management for their own development and to resolve their identified problems.
i) To encourage in joint and family based enterprise and enhance the process of sustainable income and employment for the rural poor.
j) To raise the gender awareness from the family to the community level and to ensure women’s access to and control over resources and benefits derived from the projects.
k) To address the issue of environment degradation and protect by raising awareness and plantation of trees.
l) To liaise with local, national and international organization / institutions of both GO and NGO in view of establishing strong linkage which would activate for achieving its goal.
m) To involves in relevant research activities on way to SDC’s overall institutional goal.
n) To prepare and publish different publication and to disseminate those in view of activating and strengthening the familiarity as well as status of this organization.

Governing body of SDC :
The organization has both the general committee and executive committee through which, management guides and administers it in accordance with its corporate mission and protects its assets
General committee:
General committee is the highest body of SDC. It holds the supreme power of attorney of the organization. Presently, the general committee has a total number of 27 members from different professions and different stages. The general committee elects the executive committee for a period of two years. The general committee meets once a year, if necessary, it can hold emergency meeting.
Executive committee:
The organization has a 9-member executive committee. The executive committee is elected from and by the general committee. The members of the general committee elect the members of this committee for a period of two years. It performs all responsibilities on behalf of the general committee. All governance and policy decisions of SDC are made by the executive committee.

Working area of SDC :
Every organization has a specific working area in view of operating its allout programs/projects. SDC has also a specific working areas where, it operates allout programs/projects.However, presently, SDC has been operating its all out programs and activities in 1185 villages of 196 unions under 14 upazila’s of 3 districts with much reputation.Under Faridpur district the name of 8 upazilas are Faridpur sadar, Boalmari, Alfadanga, Madukhali, Nagorkanda, Bhanga, Charvadrason & Sadarpur, under Gopalgonj district the name of 2 upazilas are Kashiani & Muksudpur and under Rajbari district the name of 4 upazilas are Rajbari sadar, Goalanda, Pangsha & Baliakandi.

Target Beneficiaries:
SDC’s target beneficiaries are both men and women (mainly women) having the following characteristics:
Landless, marginal & small farmers, fishermen, small traders, small entrepreneurs and homogeneous professional group members. Total target beneficiaries is 58847 and 165000 people have been benefited from this organization.
Approach of program/project implementation:
To materialize any program/project in a certain area, the organization always follows two approaches like target group approach and integrated community development approach.
Target group approach- before taking up any program/project for a selected area, the organization conducts socio-economic survey in that area to identify the target beneficiaries and their needs. Program/ project are taken for addressing only their needs.
Integrated community development approach-The total committee people are addressed by this approach. Programs/projects are implemented based on the needs of the whole community. Consequently, the total community people get benefit from such type of approach.

Program wise brief description are given in below:
Institution building program:
The main purpose of institution building is not only to improve the level of communication and accessibility between the public and the available services but also to make the women aware of these services and of such matters regarding their legal rights and social exploitation. The formation of small groups of rural poor and ultra- poor emphasizing women participation holding weekly meetings with the field level staffs of SDC is the first progressive step towards the development process. Each group comprising 15-30 members within the age of 18-55 years and only one member from one family. During the weekly group meetings individuals and family problems are discussed and savings program is successfully implemented. Through the weekly group meetings the group members deposit a certain amount of savings determined by them in SDC. Different types of development and awareness raising information’s are provided to the target beneficiaries/group members in the meeting. The organized group members are now actively participating in mass mediation/ arbitration meetings and male counterparts to the community are accepting such mediation and arbitration.
Rural Micro-credit program:
From the very beginning SDC launched credit program among the target beneficiaries with its own initiative in small scale in the year of 1990. Subsequently it received credit support from Palli-Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in 1992.The main objective of this program is to develop the socioeconomic as well as livelihood status of the target beneficiaries through implementation of different income generating activities (IGAs) Since then, SDC has gradually expanded this program in view of absolutely alleviating the poverty of the disadvantaged and backward poor and ultra-poor people with the emphasis of women. The beneficiaries especially women are being empowered socially and financially through implementation of different IGAs after receiving credit support from the organization.
Micro-enterprise loan program:
Contemplating as a crucial program, SDC has been implementing micro-enterprise loan program with technical and financial support of PKSF since 2004. Before this, SDC had operated this program in small scale among the advanced members of existing groups whose dealings were observed as good and who have also essential financial support in large scale for properly continuing their enterprises by its own initiative. After close observation and evaluation PKSF has given an approval to carry out this program and have been providing financial support for commensurate implementation of this program.
Micro Finance and Technical Support (MFTS) Project:
SDC has been implementing this project through the collaboration and financial support of PKSF and IFAD since 2004 (2003-2004 fiscal year). The goal of this project is to develop the livelihoods and food security of moderate and hard-core poor households and the empowerment of women. The project objective is the adoption of sustainable income generating activities and livestock technologies by the target beneficiaries. Through this project different training courses on livestock’s are being provided to the beneficiaries. After ensuring training course credit support is provided to them. Through this process, implementation of different livestock related IGAs are ensured by the beneficiaries. In new area offices, before receiving livestock related training and credit support, social development training is insured among the beneficiaries who come forward to implement different IGAs under MFTS.
Ultra Poor Micro-credit Program:
With the collaboration and financial support of PKSF, SDC has been executing the ultra poor micro-credit program since 2005. The main thrust of this program is to bring the ultra poor people under micro- credit program and to develop their livelihood status through implementation of different need based income-generating activities (IGAs). Through this program, SDC is providing micro-credit support among the ultra poor members who have not got hither to an opportunity of credit from any of the organization. Considerable and important criteria of the ultra poor members are women headed households, widow, divorced/separated from husband, victim of river erosion, beggar, marginal farmer, day laborer, parents of child labor, ex-sex-workers, tribal and others whose income below US$ 1 a day.
Seasonal Loan Program:
SDC has been implementing the seasonal loan program since September 2006 through the financial support of PKSF in a befitting manner and with much reputation. The organization has launched this program with credit support to our existing beneficiaries. Under this program, after receiving the loan primarily the beneficiaries involve in the IGA of beef fattening. Through this program, installment is being colleted at a time after a certain duration (3 to 6 month). In this case, one loanee can receive a seasonal loan even being a current loanee in view of getting additional income. The beneficiaries who have a good reputation in case of loan repayment and whose existing IGAs are going on properly and accordingly, are getting loan under this project. According to the guideline of PKSF one beneficiaries can receive at beast TK.25,000 as seasonal loan in first circle.
Human Resource Development (HRD) Program:
The major components under this program are Human and Institutional Development (HID) training and Technical Skill Development (TSD) training. Human and Institutional development training helps to develop analytical skills, positive attitudes, management and operational skills of both SDC’s staffs and organized group members. A total of 450 training courses on human and institutional development had been offered so far where, 11250 participants were attended. Technical Skill Development Training largely contributed to effective implementation of income generating activities through providing relevant information, management procedure and environmentally sounds technology. Under technical skill development training, 1025 courses offered so far where 25625 participants attended.
Community Based Fisheries Management Project (CBFM-2):
SDC has been implementing the CBFM-2 project with the collaboration and financial support of Department of Fisheries (DoF), government of Bangladesh and WorldFish Center since April, 2003. The main objective of this project is to develop the livelihood status of the community poor people through aquatic resource management. Different types of promotional activities like meeting, training, workshop, rally, loud speaking, theater etc. are being accomplished for capacity building and awareness raising among the beneficiaries about fish production as well as aquatic resource management. In view of proper management and preservation of indigenous fish, establishment of sanctuaries is the significant activity of the project.
Adarsha Gram Project-II :
SDC has been implementing the Adarsha Gram Project-II through the collaboration and financial support of Ministry of Land, Government of Bangladesh & European union since 2004. The main objective of this project is to develop the livelihood status and to build capacity of the settlers. Through this project different types promotional activities like meeting, training, workshop, establishment of linkage & communication with different stakeholders are being and would be continued accentuating leader development, establishment of savings schemes, adult & child literacy, tree plantation & environment protection, family planning, health protection, women in development, mainstreaming of settlers, cultural & sports activities. SDC works in 6 AGs with 390 households of Faridpur Sadar upazila.
Water and Sanitation Program:
With the cooperation of NGO Forum, SDC has been working on the safe water, sanitation and arsenic mitigation activities in its working area since 1994 with much reputation. The main objective of this program is to build awareness of the rural poor about the pernicious effect of water borne disease and to involve them in the practical activities of safe water, sanitation and arsenic mitigation. Different types of promotional activities like Court yard meeting, rally, VDO show, mass theater, VDC meeting are being continued in view of raising awareness of the rural poor people regarding water and sanitation.
Land & Agrarian Network Development (LAND):
This project has been implemented by SDC through receiving financial and technical support of SAMATA a national NGO since 2002. The main objective of this project is to mobilize rural landless people and to establish their rights as well as to make them empowerment through providing a piece of land with the aim of ensuring their shelter as a fundamental right which has been stated in the constitution of Bangladesh. Accentuating the objective of this program actual landless and plighted people are organized as a Samity. So far SDC has been able to organize 57 landless groups comprising 1296 members and identified 2162.96 acres of khas land through this program. In order to recover this amount of khas land SDC is continuing its endeavor through establishing communication, linkage, Network and advocacy with the respective individuals / institutions.
Non-Formal Primary Education Program:
SDC has been implementing the non-formal primary education program through technical and financial support of BRAC since 1995 in Boalmari upazila under Faridpur district. This program provides basic reading, writing and mathematical skills to illiterate adult and children. SDC provides primary education to children and adolescents who are unable to continue formal schooling because of the economic limitations of their families and the low social value of education. Under this program there are 15 schools where 450 students (315 female & 135 male) are existed in this organization. Quality education is ensured by strong monitoring system and this program is being implemented with the collaboration and financial support of BRAC.
Rural Development Project (RDP)/DISA:
SDC has been executing the Rural Development Project (RDP) with the collaboration and financial support of Inter-Cooperation (IC) since October, 2005. This is a fully new project and this project is being implemented properly following the guideline and project proposal of IC. The goal of the project is empowerment and socio-economic development of the rural poor and extreme poor women. Two principal objectives of this project are (i)-strengthening women’s capabilities and (ii) strengthening access to financial products and services. The target beneficiaries of the project are generally poor and extreme poor women. Operation of flexible credit system among the project beneficiaries is a significant feature of the project. Promotion of market extension is the crucial component of the project. In the project, need based IGA would be open for all the beneficiaries i.e. any group member can implement any IGA. Gender focus, HID, women empowerment, marketing approach and IGA implementation are the major components of the project.
Food Security for Sustainable Household Livelihood (FoSHoL) project:
SDC has been executing the FoSHol project with the collaboration and financial support of practical Action-Bangladesh (PA-B) since October, 2005.The goal of this project is food & nutritional security and livelihood development for the poor people residing highly food insecured areas. The target beneficiaries of the project are small and marginal farmers who have 50 decimal to 250 decimal land and who are 3 to 6 month food insecured in a year. Comprehensive agricultural development would be followed in the project. Homestead gardening, field crops, IPM, seed, organic farming, small scale water management, Bio-village, livestock production (cattle, goat, poultry), fish culture, agro-processing all these are implemented by the project beneficiaries. Different types of Rural Technology Extensionists (RTE) are the crucial stakeholders of the project for its sustainability.
Making Markets Work for Small Holder Farmers and Rural Producers:
This program has been materializing through the collaboration and financial as well as technical support of Practical Action-Bangladesh since August 2007 with much reputation. The overall objective of this project is to increase income and employment opportunities from production and trade in farm and non-farm activities for poor and disadvantaged rural communities in Bangladesh. The main activities of this project are capacity building, market development, training, awareness raising, support, advocacy & influencing and self-organization. The four results of this project are- (i) Enhanced capacity of partner NGOs to create demand for business and extension services, stimulating a sustainable market system for poor and disadvantaged providers, (ii) Business and extension service providers have improved skills and capacity to deliver a range of affordable services to poor producers, (iii) Producer groups, regional networks and other collaborations influence the business environment, (iv) National and international development community are aware of critical success factors relating to market development approach and business services for sustainable livelihoods.
Disaster Management Program:
Disaster management program is the own program of SDC. Through this program different types of awareness raising activities regarding disaster management are being continued through meeting and training. Not only that, SDC has been providing different types of relief materials (cash and kind) among the beneficiaries who are victim at the time of disaster.
Cultural Program:
SDC has a strong and competent theatre group. Different type of awareness raising programs have been accomplishing through this theatre group from its inception in view of accelerating and commensurate implementation of different projects. This theatre group has been praising from different NGOs, Govt. and Donor agencies for its excellent performance. This program is emphasized that the different program related scripts are prepared and delivered according to that.

Moreover, SDC so far have been able to establish Network, linkage, collaboration, partnership with different local, national and international NGOs/donor agencies, different government institutions as well as different peoples organizations / professional groups. SDC always follows a policy of ‘comprehensive endeavors in development process’ and therefore, it sought all kind of cooperation and support from the people of all sphere of life, government institutions and different donor agencies. However, SDC has been providing different supports to its target beneficiaries through carrying out different programs and interventions within its organizational structure and approach, which are elaborated here consecutively-
Vision:
The vision of SDC is to establish just, good governance, exploitation and poverty free; gender equity and environment friendly well established Bangladesh.
Mission:
Not relief but release is the principle of SDC and it is practicing the institutional approach of the rural disadvantaged people ensuring their active participation in development process. The participation, access and control over the resources, facilities and also development process are ensured by equally men and women. Developed and strong relation with local, national and international development agencies are given emphasized. Participatory discussion and democratic system is strongly followed regarding resource management and empowerment of the poor and extreme poor for their sustainable development.
Goal :
To develop socio-economic status of the poor and extreme poor in view of poverty reduction and livelihood development through commensurate management of resources with an emphasis of women empowerment.
Objectives :
a) To work in the interest of the distressed and oppressed population of the society with the emphasis on such fundamental needs as food, cloth, shelter, health and education..
b) To encourage, stimulate and facilitate on building of organizations through ensuring the participation of poor and extreme poor with the emphasis of women participation.
c) To motivate and mobilize small groups of target beneficiaries in rural areas and to deposit savings by them
d) To foster both formal and non-formal education for adults and the disadvantaged children insuring community involvement in this process.
e) To facilitate the creation of employment opportunities for the beneficiaries so that they would be able to uplift their livelihood as per their aspiration.
f) To stabilize population growth, protect human health and make them human resources through resorting conceptual training.
g) To organize and train the deprived section of the rural population as groups of active, patriotic, hard working and self dependent citizens of Bangladesh.
h) To build the capacity in terms of human and financial management for their own development and to resolve their identified problems.

Governing body of SDC :
The organization has both the general committee and executive committee through which, management guides and administers it in accordance with its corporate mission and protects its assets
General committee:
General committee is the highest body of SDC. It holds the supreme power of attorney of the organization. Presently, the general committee has a total number of 27 members from different professions and different stages. The general committee elects the executive committee for a period of two years. The general committee meets once a year, if necessary, it can hold emergency meeting.
Executive committee:
The organization has a 9-member executive committee. The executive committee is elected from and by the general committee. The members of the general committee elect the members of this committee for a period of two years. It performs all responsibilities on behalf of the general committee. All governance and policy decisions of SDC are made by the executive committee.

Working area of SDC :
Every organization has a specific working area in view of operating its allout programs/projects. SDC has also a specific working areas where, it operates allout programs/projects.However, presently, SDC has been operating its all out programs and activities in 1185 villages of 196 unions under 14 upazila’s of 3 districts with much reputation.Under Faridpur district the name of 8 upazilas are Faridpur sadar, Boalmari, Alfadanga, Madukhali, Nagorkanda, Bhanga, Charvadrason & Sadarpur, under Gopalgonj district the name of 2 upazilas are Kashiani & Muksudpur and under Rajbari district the name of 4 upazilas are Rajbari sadar, Goalanda, Pangsha & Baliakandi.

Target Beneficiaries:
SDC’s target beneficiaries are both men and women (mainly women) having the following characteristics:
Landless, marginal & small farmers, fishermen, small traders, small entrepreneurs and homogeneous professional group members. Total target beneficiaries is 58847 and 165000 people have been benefited from this organization.
Approach of program/project implementation:
To materialize any program/project in a certain area, the organization always follows two approaches like target group approach and integrated community development approach.
Target group approach- before taking up any program/project for a selected area, the organization conducts socio-economic survey in that area to identify the target beneficiaries and their needs. Program/ project are taken for addressing only their needs.
Integrated community development approach-The total committee people are addressed by this approach. Programs/projects are implemented based on the needs of the whole community. Consequently, the total community people get benefit from such type of approach.

Program wise brief description are given in below:
Institution building program:
The main purpose of institution building is not only to improve the level of communication and accessibility between the public and the available services but also to make the women aware of these services and of such matters regarding their legal rights and social exploitation. The formation of small groups of rural poor and ultra- poor emphasizing women participation holding weekly meetings with the field level staffs of SDC is the first progressive step towards the development process. Each group comprising 15-30 members within the age of 18-55 years and only one member from one family. During the weekly group meetings individuals and family problems are discussed and savings program is successfully implemented. Through the weekly group meetings the group members deposit a certain amount of savings determined by them in SDC. Different types of development and awareness raising information’s are provided to the target beneficiaries/group members in the meeting. The organized group members are now actively participating in mass mediation/ arbitration meetings and male counterparts to the community are accepting such mediation and arbitration.
Rural Micro-credit program:
From the very beginning SDC launched credit program among the target beneficiaries with its own initiative in small scale in the year of 1990. Subsequently it received credit support from Palli-Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in 1992.The main objective of this program is to develop the socioeconomic as well as livelihood status of the target beneficiaries through implementation of different income generating activities (IGAs) Since then, SDC has gradually expanded this program in view of absolutely alleviating the poverty of the disadvantaged and backward poor and ultra-poor people with the emphasis of women. The beneficiaries especially women are being empowered socially and financially through implementation of different IGAs after receiving credit support from the organization.
Micro-enterprise loan program:
Contemplating as a crucial program, SDC has been implementing micro-enterprise loan program with technical and financial support of PKSF since 2004. Before this, SDC had operated this program in small scale among the advanced members of existing groups whose dealings were observed as good and who have also essential financial support in large scale for properly continuing their enterprises by its own initiative. After close observation and evaluation PKSF has given an approval to carry out this program and have been providing financial support for commensurate implementation of this program.
Micro Finance and Technical Support (MFTS) Project:
SDC has been implementing this project through the collaboration and financial support of PKSF and IFAD since 2004 (2003-2004 fiscal year). The goal of this project is to develop the livelihoods and food security of moderate and hard-core poor households and the empowerment of women. The project objective is the adoption of sustainable income generating activities and livestock technologies by the target beneficiaries. Through this project different training courses on livestock’s are being provided to the beneficiaries. After ensuring training course credit support is provided to them. Through this process, implementation of different livestock related IGAs are ensured by the beneficiaries. In new area offices, before receiving livestock related training and credit support, social development training is insured among the beneficiaries who come forward to implement different IGAs under MFTS.
Ultra Poor Micro-credit Program:
With the collaboration and financial support of PKSF, SDC has been executing the ultra poor micro-credit program since 2005. The main thrust of this program is to bring the ultra poor people under micro- credit program and to develop their livelihood status through implementation of different need based income-generating activities (IGAs). Through this program, SDC is providing micro-credit support among the ultra poor members who have not got hither to an opportunity of credit from any of the organization. Considerable and important criteria of the ultra poor members are women headed households, widow, divorced/separated from husband, victim of river erosion, beggar, marginal farmer, day laborer, parents of child labor, ex-sex-workers, tribal and others whose income below US$ 1 a day.
Seasonal Loan Program:
SDC has been implementing the seasonal loan program since September 2006 through the financial support of PKSF in a befitting manner and with much reputation. The organization has launched this program with credit support to our existing beneficiaries. Under this program, after receiving the loan primarily the beneficiaries involve in the IGA of beef fattening. Through this program, installment is being colleted at a time after a certain duration (3 to 6 month). In this case, one loanee can receive a seasonal loan even being a current loanee in view of getting additional income. The beneficiaries who have a good reputation in case of loan repayment and whose existing IGAs are going on properly and accordingly, are getting loan under this project. According to the guideline of PKSF one beneficiaries can receive at beast TK.25,000 as seasonal loan in first circle.
Human Resource Development (HRD) Program:
The major components under this program are Human and Institutional Development (HID) training and Technical Skill Development (TSD) training. Human and Institutional development training helps to develop analytical skills, positive attitudes, management and operational skills of both SDC’s staffs and organized group members. A total of 450 training courses on human and institutional development had been offered so far where, 11250 participants were attended. Technical Skill Development Training largely contributed to effective implementation of income generating activities through providing relevant information, management procedure and environmentally sounds technology. Under technical skill development training, 1025 courses offered so far where 25625 participants attended.
Community Based Fisheries Management Project (CBFM-2):
SDC has been implementing the CBFM-2 project with the collaboration and financial support of Department of Fisheries (DoF), government of Bangladesh and WorldFish Center since April, 2003. The main objective of this project is to develop the livelihood status of the community poor people through aquatic resource management. Different types of promotional activities like meeting, training, workshop, rally, loud speaking, theater etc. are being accomplished for capacity building and awareness raising among the beneficiaries about fish production as well as aquatic resource management. In view of proper management and preservation of indigenous fish, establishment of sanctuaries is the significant activity of the project.
Adarsha Gram Project-II :
SDC has been implementing the Adarsha Gram Project-II through the collaboration and financial support of Ministry of Land, Government of Bangladesh & European union since 2004. The main objective of this project is to develop the livelihood status and to build capacity of the settlers. Through this project different types promotional activities like meeting, training, workshop, establishment of linkage & communication with different stakeholders are being and would be continued accentuating leader development, establishment of savings schemes, adult & child literacy, tree plantation & environment protection, family planning, health protection, women in development, mainstreaming of settlers, cultural & sports activities. SDC works in 6 AGs with 390 households of Faridpur Sadar upazila.
Water and Sanitation Program:
With the cooperation of NGO Forum, SDC has been working on the safe water, sanitation and arsenic mitigation activities in its working area since 1994 with much reputation. The main objective of this program is to build awareness of the rural poor about the pernicious effect of water borne disease and to involve them in the practical activities of safe water, sanitation and arsenic mitigation. Different types of promotional activities like Court yard meeting, rally, VDO show, mass theater, VDC meeting are being continued in view of raising awareness of the rural poor people regarding water and sanitation.
Land & Agrarian Network Development (LAND):
This project has been implemented by SDC through receiving financial and technical support of SAMATA a national NGO since 2002. The main objective of this project is to mobilize rural landless people and to establish their rights as well as to make them empowerment through providing a piece of land with the aim of ensuring their shelter as a fundamental right which has been stated in the constitution of Bangladesh. Accentuating the objective of this program actual landless and plighted people are organized as a Samity. So far SDC has been able to organize 57 landless groups comprising 1296 members and identified 2162.96 acres of khas land through this program. In order to recover this amount of khas land SDC is continuing its endeavor through establishing communication, linkage, Network and advocacy with the respective individuals / institutions.
Non-Formal Primary Education Program:
SDC has been implementing the non-formal primary education program through technical and financial support of BRAC since 1995 in Boalmari upazila under Faridpur district. This program provides basic reading, writing and mathematical skills to illiterate adult and children. SDC provides primary education to children and adolescents who are unable to continue formal schooling because of the economic limitations of their families and the low social value of education. Under this program there are 15 schools where 450 students (315 female & 135 male) are existed in this organization. Quality education is ensured by strong monitoring system and this program is being implemented with the collaboration and financial support of BRAC.
Rural Development Project (RDP)/DISA:
SDC has been executing the Rural Development Project (RDP) with the collaboration and financial support of Inter-Cooperation (IC) since October, 2005. This is a fully new project and this project is being implemented properly following the guideline and project proposal of IC. The goal of the project is empowerment and socio-economic development of the rural poor and extreme poor women. Two principal objectives of this project are (i)-strengthening women’s capabilities and (ii) strengthening access to financial products and services. The target beneficiaries of the project are generally poor and extreme poor women. Operation of flexible credit system among the project beneficiaries is a significant feature of the project. Promotion of market extension is the crucial component of the project. In the project, need based IGA would be open for all the beneficiaries i.e. any group member can implement any IGA. Gender focus, HID, women empowerment, marketing approach and IGA implementation are the major components of the project.
Food Security for Sustainable Household Livelihood (FoSHoL) project:
SDC has been executing the FoSHol project with the collaboration and financial support of practical Action-Bangladesh (PA-B) since October, 2005.The goal of this project is food & nutritional security and livelihood development for the poor people residing highly food insecured areas. The target beneficiaries of the project are small and marginal farmers who have 50 decimal to 250 decimal land and who are 3 to 6 month food insecured in a year. Comprehensive agricultural development would be followed in the project. Homestead gardening, field crops, IPM, seed, organic farming, small scale water management, Bio-village, livestock production (cattle, goat, poultry), fish culture, agro-processing all these are implemented by the project beneficiaries. Different types of Rural Technology Extensionists (RTE) are the crucial stakeholders of the project for its sustainability.
Making Markets Work for Small Holder Farmers and Rural Producers:
This program has been materializing through the collaboration and financial as well as technical support of Practical Action-Bangladesh since August 2007 with much reputation. The overall objective of this project is to increase income and employment opportunities from production and trade in farm and non-farm activities for poor and disadvantaged rural communities in Bangladesh. The main activities of this project are capacity building, market development, training, awareness raising, support, advocacy & influencing and self-organization. The four results of this project are- (i) Enhanced capacity of partner NGOs to create demand for business and extension services, stimulating a sustainable market system for poor and disadvantaged providers, (ii) Business and extension service providers have improved skills and capacity to deliver a range of affordable services to poor producers, (iii) Producer groups, regional networks and other collaborations influence the business environment, (iv) National and international development community are aware of critical success factors relating to market development approach and business services for sustainable livelihoods.
Disaster Management Program:
Disaster management program is the own program of SDC. Through this program different types of awareness raising activities regarding disaster management are being continued through meeting and training. Not only that, SDC has been providing different types of relief materials (cash and kind) among the beneficiaries who are victim at the time of disaster.
Cultural Program:
SDC has a strong and competent theatre group. Different type of awareness raising programs have been accomplishing through this theatre group from its inception in view of accelerating and commensurate implementation of different projects. This theatre group has been praising from different NGOs, Govt. and Donor agencies for its excellent performance. This program is emphasized that the different program related scripts are prepared and delivered according to that.
